Getting this classification right avoids both over- and under-documenting the project.
Cooling, controls, and scale
A small server closet added during a tenant improvement is scoped very differently from a large, redundant server room. Continuous cooling, economizer considerations, and controls are addressed on the mechanical certificate, and applicable acceptance tests (NRCA) verify installed controls in the field. Server rooms that require continuous cooling or redundant units are scoped differently from a single-split closet. We document the comfort and regulated systems normally while evaluating the dedicated cooling for process-load treatment, so a small mission-critical space is neither under-documented nor pushed into the larger, specialized data-center scope it does not warrant.
